William Michael Mahoney, 60, of Buckhannon, West Virginia passed away on Monday, December 16, 2013.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Friday, Dec 20th from 6-8 pm at Paul Ippolito Summit Memorial, 7 Summit Ave, Summit NJ. The Funeral will be held on Saturday, Dec 21st 10 am at Our Lady of Peace Church, New Providence. Interment will follow at St. Teresa's Cemetery.
Dr. Mahoney graduated from Seton Hall Preparatory School in South Orange, NJ in 1971 and earned degrees in History and English from the University of Delaware in 1975. He continued his education earning his masters in History from Wake Forest University and his PhD from University of Connecticut.
He joined the faculty staff of West Virginia Weslyan College in 1983 and graded his final exams last week. He was the Chairman of the History Department and International Studies. He served as Faculty Athletic Representative from 1989 to 1998. He was chosen by the students in 1989 to receive "The Community Counsel Teaching" award, he also was awarded "The 1999 Exemplary Teacher Award" selected by his fellow faculty. He published "The History of the Czech Republic and Slovakia" in 2011 and was promoted to full Professor of History this Fall. He truly loved teaching.
He enjoyed many trips to Ireland and other countries with his Weslyan students. He had a love of travel, especially conversing with the locals, hiking, taking photos and relaxing in local gathering spots. He enjoyed concerts, soccer and minor league baseball.
He is survived by his sister Kathleen Malcolm (nee: Mahoney), his brothers Michael Mahoney and his wife Lisa and Kevin Mahoney and his wife Elizabeth. He is also survived by his beloved nieces and nephews: Jennifer, Kimberly, Jason, Kevin, Justin, Eliza and William.
He will greatly be missed by his family and friends.
