John T. Shanahan of Summit, NJ passed away at Morristown Medical Center on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at the age of 72.
The visitation will be held at Paul Ippolito Summit Memorial, 7 Summit Ave., Summit, NJ on Sunday, Dec. 2nd, from 2-6 PM.
The Funeral Mass will be held in Corpus Christi Church, Chatham, NJ on Monday Dec. 3 rd at 11:30 am. Interment will follow in St. Teresa's Cemetery, Summit.
John was born in Brooklyn, NY and lived in Madison, NJ and New Providence, NJ before moving to Summit, in 1975.
He graduated from Brooklyn College in the top 5 percent of his class with a B.S. degree in accounting. In 1960 he began a 40 year career at KPMG in New York City before retiring as a partner in 2000. In 1964 John received the gold medal from the New York Society of CPAs for highest achievement in the 1964 CPA examination. John held many managerial and partnership responsibilities over the years including chairman of the AICPA Committee on Banking and Savings Institutions. He was also a member of the New York State CPA Society's Banks and Savings Institution Accounting committee and Cooperation with Bankers committee. During this time he also served in the US Army Reserves from 1965-66.
John was a founding member of the Summit Soccer Club and served as Treasurer at Corpus Christi Church and Treasurer of the Summit Arboretum. He was a board member of the College Access Foundation of CA since its founding in 2005 as well as current board member and Treasurer of scholarship foundation for Inner-city Children . He was also, in his spirit of giving, a frequent blood donor.
Of all of his accomplishments, John will best be remembered as loving and devoted family man and friend. His idea of the ideal retirement was to be able to take long walks with his wife on the beach in Sea Girt where they spent summers and to spend time with his children and grandchildren.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Dorothy (nee Werder). Loving father of Timothy (Alison) Shanahan of Darien, CT, Kathryn (James) Keenan and Margery (Thomas) Conniff, all of Summit, and the late Gregory Shanahan. Adoring grandfather of Katie, Megan, and Lizzie Shanahan, Margie, Annie, Betsy, Gregory, and Deirdre Keenan, and Mary Kate, Tommy, Patrick, and John Conniff. Dear brother of George Shanahan of Long Island, NY and Carole Shanahan of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY.
